Herbal Teas for Pregnancy

By Sarah Popivker

Being a Doula, i meet and support a lot of women in their journey from pregnancy to labor, birth and the immediate postpartum.

As a Herbalist and Aromatherapist, i get asked a lot of questions on natural remedies for this or that complaint.

While i always suggest to keep in touch with the care provider and to update him/her on any new symptom , i do offer some tips for a holistic approach, depending on the need.

Safety is key, and if i feel that the matter is out of my scope of practice, i surely refer the expectant families to other professionals (care provider, but also chiropractor, acupressurist, massage therapist, etc.); but if my training and experience can offer some relief and benefits, i often offer tips on how to safely use Essential Oils or Herbal Remedies.

Recently i have learned in depth about the woman's reproductive system, and which herbs and oils to use to help relieving several complaints.

A big part of learning Herbology is hands on practice. Becoming acquainted with different issues and with herbs and the different methods of preparing remedies, from decoctions to infusions to extracts.

For my training course, i had to come up with different recipes, and test them to find out whether they are effective: i decided to join my Doula work with my Herbology, and prepare two teas to help Moms-to-be throughout pregnancy, up to birth.

The first tea is a pregnancy support tea specially crafted for the First and Second Trimester.

I did not include Raspberry Leaf Tea in this recipe because it could cause premature contraction in women that have a history of miscarriage/preterm labor, so you can never be too cautious.

Pregnancy Support Tea (I and II Trimesters)

Ingredients:

Nettles: rich in Calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, vitamins A, B, C, tannins, β-carotene, chlorophyll and more;

Lemon Balm: nerve tonic, rich in antioxidants, perfect to relieve anxiety;

Spearmint: helpful to relieve nausea and indigestion; rich in vitamins A and C;

Rose Hips: rich in vitamins C, E and K, calcium, magnesium, manganese,  β-carotene, flavonoids, lycopene, omega-3 and omega-6, and pectin; it is also a gentle laxative.

Infuse a heaping teaspoon in a tea mug for 15-20 minutes and enjoy!

The second tea is a pregnancy support tea for the Third Trimester and for Labor.

It has Raspberry leaf to tone the uterus, and stimulate more effective contractions.

Pregnancy Support Tea (III Trimester and Labor)

Ingredients:

Hibiscus: helpful in keeping blood pressure under control;

Raspberry Leaf: tonic for the uterus and the nervous system; rich in vitamin C, folate, calcium, iron, zinc;

Nettles: rich in Calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, vitamins A, B, C, tannins, β-carotene, chlorophyll and stimulates lactation;

Lemon Balm: nerve tonic, rich in antioxidants, perfect to relieve anxiety;

Lemon Peel: to add some delicious taste and extra vitamin C.

Infuse a heaping teaspoon in a tea mug for 15-20 minutes and enjoy all the way into labor.

I provided some free samples to tasters, and so far i had only good reviews!

These teas are available for sale on my Doula Website:
